Description of Program: Spirit Strong Singers will share how drumming helped in their journeys of healing and helped them to find their voice. Participants will learn cultural teachings about the drum, how to hold a beat with a song, the cultural meanings behind different drumbeats, and the stories that songs hold. Participants will build curiosity about sound by examining connections between music and nature and they will understand that sound is a form of energy that originates from vibrating objects and that the vibration from drumming is a type of healing energy in Indigenous culture. A variety of drums and shakers are provided for participants to use.

Bio of presenter:
Spirit Strong Singers originated in 2018 from a group of passionate people who love to drum. Spirit Strong Singers is a group of Two-Spirit and women living in Treaty Six Territory and Homeland of the Métis as well as the traditional territory of the Nations of Nehiyawak, which include the Plains, Swampy, Woodland Cree, Dene, Dakota, and the Métis. The group brings medicine to the people through the vibrational energies of drum and song. A central value of Spirit Strong Singers is having the ability to share Two-Spirit medicine and to uplift Two-Spirit voices. The drum bundle of Spirit Strong Singers is cared for by Jennifer Lenny (they/them) who is a Métis Two-Spirit of Woodland Cree and settler ancestry of British, Scottish and Italian relatives and is a registered member of the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan. The other members of Spirit Strong Singers who will be joining the “Sharing Stories Through Drumming” program are Meagan Nolan (they/she), Madison Marwood (she/her) and Andrea Ledding (she/her).
