Colourful Construction

Colourful Construction

This STEAM-based program encourages students to explore how science, technology, engineering, art and math all play a role in designing and building beautiful and strong structures. Students will learn about the Cosmic Commotion exhibit in Wonderhub, and how it is a perfect example of when STEAM mashes together to create something functional and beautiful.
This program has been adapted to engage students in the following grades:

Pre-K -Grade 2 – Focusing on shapes, colours, and open-ended materials to create and build something that uses basic building prompts and then encouraging students to turn their basic design into an art piece by adding artistic embellishments.

Grade 3-Grade 5 – Focusing on engineering with simple machines, and afterwards, incorporating artistic elements to create something that is both beautiful and functional.

This program has the following curriculum connections:

  • Investigate observable characteristics of objects and materials in their environment.
  • Create art works using a variety of visual art methods, concepts, forms, and media.
  • Create visual art works that express ideas about the world and natural, constructed, and imagined environments.
Into the Woods

Into the Woods

This creative storytelling program encourages students to explore the beauty of Saskatchewan’s natural world, including the plants and animals. They will learn about Wonderhub’s North Woods exhibit which features a storytelling area with a fire pit, a fishing boat, and northern plants and animals. Students will learn about how this exhibit came to life and they will have the chance to create their mythical creature that they think might be hiding in Saskatchewan’s landscapes.

This program has been adapted to engage students in the following grades:

Pre-K -Grade 2 – Focusing on learning about a selection of Saskatchewan animals and some of their unique traits that they have to live in Saskatchewan. Students will be able to design and create their own mythical Saskatchewan creature.

Grade 3-Grade 5 – Focusing on learning about  animal adaptations in Saskatchewan and the meaning of the term “cryptozoology”. Students will be guided to create their own Saskatchewan cryptid story.

This program has the following curriculum connections:

  • Create visual art works that express ideas about the world and natural, constructed, and imagined environments.
  • Comprehend, retell, and respond to basic ideas in stories texts read to them.
  • Compose and create using various visual, multimedia, oral, and written texts that explore and present thoughts, ideas, and experiences.
  • Examine and differentiate observable characteristics of plants, animals, and people in their local environment.
My child was completely engaged the whole time and didn’t ask to stop or go do something else. He really enjoyed himself and was “glowing“ afterwards!

How do I apply for a Virtual School Discovery Visit for the 2021/2022 School Year?

For the 2021/2022 School Year, you are welcome to request a booking starting on August 25, 2021. Select the REQUEST A VISIT button, complete the form, and a staff member will be in touch with you regarding your booking request.

Does the Program provide materials?

Wonderhub will provide a suggested list of open-ended materials that are more commonly found in classrooms and homes. Teachers/parents will need to gather their own materials for students but programs are designed to allow for a variety of materials to be used in order to accomplish the program goal.

What is technology is required for students to participate in this program?

For students who are attending in-person classes, the teacher will be required to have access to a computer that can connect to Zoom. The teacher will need to have a way to display their screen on a large screen or Smartboard in order for all students to be able to see the Program Facilitator. A sound system hooked into the computer that provides adequate sound for all students to hear is also strongly suggested. The teacher is welcome to use a camera in order to the Program Facilitator to see the students, or they can speak on behalf of students if they have questions or want to share.

For students who are attending virtual classes, the teacher will get an access link for their Zoom session. They will be able to share with their students along with the list of materials that can be used to take part in the program so that the parents have time to gather materials.

What if some of my students don’t have materials, can they still participate?

In order to accommodate students who were unable to gather materials, each teacher will also receive a PDF of a booklet that has activities related to the theme that they can follow along with.

How does the booking process work?

Teachers fill in the Request a Booking online form. This form is then reviewed and  if the requested date and time is available a confirmation email will be sent along with the material lists and booklet PDF.

How are payments processed?

At the end of each month, all classes that took place in a Virtual School visit will be sent an invoice. Teachers are then able to call in Tuesday-Thursday from 9:00am-6:00pm to make their payment using a credit card.
